right I'm back from Saudi and finally got round to testing my wassell set ups on both the scooters. if I connect a h4 bulb across the 2 yellow wires from the stator it is bright at tickover and increases if I rev the scooters slightly.
once I connect the wassell I take a reading across the red and the black. the best I can get is 7 volts. this is the same for both scoots. I have tried it with a brand new wassell and it is the same. any ideas on why there isn't a 12 volt output from the red wire?

That's strange. Just to check, you are testing AC voltage across the yellows and DC voltage across red and black?
The wassel may need to be earthed to frame to allow it to operate correct.
Hard to diagnose without actually being there, sorry.

does the wassell need a load to give out the full 12+volts ?

Yes it does, sane as with the AC regulator you will need a load to get it to show the output properly. The reason is that the regulator part is designed to short surplus power to earth (that's why they have a finned casing). Just connect your headlamp bulb, battery and you should see 12 plus volts.

I overlooked the obvious...................
I'd assumed the headlamp bulb was connected across the red and black.
