Hi. Welcome to the forum.

I can't explain the number, but the side casing is an early SIII one, as there are no external support ribs in the casting.

There is always the possibility that the casing wasn't stamped with the "1" at the factory......

Thanks Martin, I was told that maybe it could be the ID stamp of the guy who originally built the motor at the factory.

The wife and I visit Italy quite a lot and "parlare un po' in italiano" so I've e-mailed someone over there who may be able to tell me what it is.
Cheers, dt

That is a series 2 cover( no strenghening ribs) and the 1 is thought to be the inspectors number I have seen a 3 stamped on a couple of scoots I have owned.

Series II and early series III casings did not have strengthening ribs. Unribbed series III side casings are not that common, as they were phased out early in production.

I've been working on a new to me series two. It has a '2' stamped in the same place.
