Aero filler cap

Postby gizmo » Wed Oct 21, 2015 5:12 pm

Thinking of fitting an aero filler cap on new project. Any advice, do's or don't's. Or is it a bad idea to start with. Thanks

It is worth thinking it through.

First of all, if no one is going to see the filler cap, because it is covered by a double seat, I wouldn't bother.

If you are going to fit one, then remember that adding a fixed filler neck to the top of a large tank may make the tank too big to fit into the frame. I had an "oh, sh!t" moment some years ago when we were fitting such a tank into Mark Watts Leery Li225 Series 1 TS1 225 LC. The oversize tank wouldn't fit, so we cut the whole top loop off, fitted a hinge beneath the toolbox door and some Dzuz fasteners to the rear body by the back light, and made the whole thing hinge out of the way.

To be honest, it was one of the features of the finished scooter, and the machine still exists as the custom scooter "Unhinged".

Give it some thought, because even though I have a Suzuki filler cap on my Abarth, I am not planning to fit one to my next scooter.

That sounds sensible enough, it was one of those ooh that would look good moments with not a lot of thought going into it
