Is it ok for there to be a bit of play on the crownwheel.?
Just stripped mine and found theres some play, is this normal

Is it play on the bearings? That is normal. If it is play between two parts the that is not OK. You may be able to tighten up the rivets but really a new solid type would be better. Solid types must be fitted with a bronze bush because roller bearings will damage the inner face.
