Building a Gp headset. The control rods have holes each end for the split pins.Which way round do they go? one hole nearer the end of the rod than the other.Tried both ways, cant get bush, pulley on.

Sorry if I appear pedantic, but I hope you mean roll pins as split pins are unsuitable.

Please don't think I'm correcting your terminology for the sake of it. I've had enough hassle elsewhere for people to think that of me....

I don't understand:

one hole nearer the end of the rod than the other

unless you mean one hole & one end of the rod is a different distance from the other hole @ the other rod end. If so, the shorter distance is on the outer end, the longer distance on the inner (pulley) end.

I have encountered problems like this in the past. It may have been a difference between Spanish and Italian non-GP models although, to be honest, I never got to the bottom of it. There seem to be several variants of the rods.

With specific regards to GP models, the only difference I am aware of is the 4mm (Italian) and 5mm (Indian) roll pin hole difference.

Sorry, that's of no help other than maybe reassuring you that you aren't mad :)

I had a similar problem with remade Li type splined rods. I ended up filing another groove in them for the brass wheel bolts.

Are there 2 sizes,Italian /Indian ,of the outer gear change bush/collar? Its an Italian headset bottom,so I guess probably slimmer than an Indian one,but the collar I got today wont fit over the tapered piece of the handle bar,and the outer diameter is smaller than the end of the casting.
