for the cost of the parts and someone doing the work it would probably be cheaper to buy a new one

^... don't just buy another of the same or you're very likely to have the same repeat failures. If you source decent LT coils (Italian or BGM) and modify the stator's laminates to allow them to fit, then the result is a much improved stator that is less likely to fail than another new Indian one. Failure of LT coils on Indian stators is very very common, which is the main reason why BGM had a niche to fill by producing a decent upgrade.

Sure, not all Indian stators fail, nor do all BGM stators last forever, but upgrading the LT coil on an Indian stator is a very worthwhile upgrade.

Most people that have a failed Indian stator end up with at least 2 because the thought of spending £80 (BGM) on a stator is not as attractive as spending £40 on another Indian one, however, when the second Indian one fails they tend to question whether it was a good decision? There is no doubt that there is a very good chance of an Indian stator failing (sounds like HxPaul already has 2 examples) but it is not dissimilar to the smoking lobby who wheel out 108 year old Mrs. Miggins, who has smoked 40 a day for 90, suggesting that this is 'proof' that smoking is not harmful to health... same goes for Indian stators (no, not 40 a day!).

Adam

PS - A BGM LT coil should cost you about £20
