Hi All,
Staying on the Isle of Skye is very hilly and my GP150 struggles at times, so I am thinking of fitting a bigger barrel,and piston for a bit more pulling power. I have fitted a expansion exhaust and a 22mm jetex carb, an electronic ignition kit, but i need a bit more pulling power. Any recommendations, on what set up would do the job without another mortgage. Any recommendations please on a kit.

Hi Kenny,

There is no substitute for cc's. The cheapest tune is a rebore and bigger piston.

150 = 57mm piston
175 = 62mm piston
185 = 64mm piston

A bigger crank, 60mm, will add more torque but not too many cc's.

Plenty of tuners will undertake this work, matching the port to the tune.

What about a Stage 4 tune? More power and carry on using your existing carb and pipe

What expansion is it Kenny? some of them push the power up the rev range and won't suit the gearing. If it's power to get up hills you want then a pipe that gives low down torque might be better, JL3 or Franspeed Supertourer or BGM big bore

Or have your current barrel bored to 62mm and fit a 175 conversion piston and a used 175 head.

Oldest proven conversion that will give you some more oomph.

Ask yourself this, do you think it will be quality for that money? These kits are lucky dip you might get an ok one but most of the time they are far from it, but maybe if you bought one and sent it to a tuner then they might be able to sort out the porting, etc. but by the time you have done that you might as well just bought yourself a quality kit in the 1st place.

There are plenty of decent kits out there, the GT and Mugello kits would fit the bill but you are talking around the £500 quid mark plus a decent crank, carb, pipe, etc. Or for a bit less money then the Casa 185 kit would work well

Also you mentioned you have fitted an expansion exhaust, which pipe is it exactly? Expansions don't really with low down torque which you need for tackling hills, etc. I would have thought a clubman would fit the bill better, especially with a 22mm carb. Also what gearing are you running?

These are my experiences.
I bought second hand Indian barrel like that, rebore it with a reasonable piston etc etc
Then gave up, couldn't get it to run right, just too much bother, waste of £100 in my case, There are others who know much more than me, do well with these kits after a bit of fettling.
I would suggest you speak to a dealer/tuner, tell them what you want and either get yours tuned accordingly with an appropriate exhaust and carb or their recommended kits.

Thanks burnside and meds for the answers. The exhaust is a sterling. Quality for the money who know without trying the kit. What I was trying to find out if anybody got a good enough kit at a reasonable price, if not I will go for a 175 rebore.

just bought one of these ally 185 kits from buzzsolomoto. i spoke to them before buying it and was told they 'tidy' them up before selling. the one i got will be going back as the inlet manifold only just covers the port on one side by about 0'5 - 1'0mm and with piston at bdc the transfers are approx 5mm higher then bottom of exhaust port.
Took the kit back to buzz today. Have to say credit were its due. Sorted me out with a decent topend no problem. Nice fella aswell.

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

The side casing gasket that's included might be ok though

A Sterling is a copy of a PM25, I think. If so, they were made to produce power well up the Rev range. Do you have to slip your clutch to get it moving?

agreed on both counts.... one well known seller advertises his stuff on facebook, ex vat ... I told him it was misleading and he said he also sold to the trade, so advertised his prices that way.... I now buy as little as possible from him...

Top end prices ok ,plus VAT, bloody hell I am not a pro football player. There is no way I would pay the prices he is asking, £60 for a head skim, bloody daylight robbery , I could get a 6 cylinder truck head skimmed for £50 not 2 long ago. I will go into my local engineers shop the next time I am in inverness, 200 miles return journey, if I ride my lammy there, the time I get there, it will need a rebore lol. No mate I don’t have to slip the clutch to get her moving.

SKIM HEAD 60+VAT

£72.00 for a simple head skim ??

You'd want your head looking at to pay that ! the sad thing is there are presumably plenty of newcomers to classic scootering who are paying those prices
