Removed the rear hub on my series 3 LI150 Special to find everything covered in oil.
I assume the oil seal has failed.
Can this be replaced with the bearing and shaft in place or does everything have to come out including the bearing to replace the oil seal.

can be replaced from hub side without any difficulty.........

On the layshaft and all the gearbox has to be stripped down and the layshaft removed..............Just hope its only the oil seal !

I thought I had a leak in the rear hub seal. When I removed the hub, there was oil over the back of the crank case as well as the hub, and I realised that my oil breather was blocked and oil was being forced out of the gear change shaft o ring. Check this first, it will save you a whole lot of unnecessary work!

Fingers crossed it's the oil seal or the breather.....................but knowing my luck

Also I know very rare but check the bearing is not spinning in the casing I've seen this before

Yup......last time I had an oil leak in the hub I changed the seal.....no joy, still leaking. I did a full strip down with the intention of changing the "O" ring on the layshaft. When doing the strip I spun the casing over and the rear hub bearing just fell out

Don't know if the bearing was worn or whether the casing had enlarged, but changed with a new Casa bearing (and new O ring) and ran fine with no leaks.

Yep, bearing not free but can be turned in casing.

Bearing very loose on strip down. Almost 1.25thou smaller than new replacement.

If I understand correctly, the new, replacement bearing is probably the correct size & the lay-shaft/hub should be the beneficiaries of the improvement in fit.
I hope that the fit of the bearing outer into the crankcase ‘journal’ is about right.

Ideally, there should be a clearance of 0.0013” to 0.0001” which would equate to a light transition fit. Any sloppier than that should be remedied, as should any fit tighter.
