What timing?

Postby Stevepshipley » Tue Feb 09, 2016 9:29 pm

Just finishing rebuild of a 69 bog stanbdard GP125 engine, all as it was except new bearings seals rings etc, still on 6 volt points. Where abouts should I be setting the timing please? Book says 21 degrees but what should it be with todays fuels etc. my kitted scooters (mugellos) are at 17 degrees.
Cheers steve

I would say 19 would be about right for a standard scooter Steve.

ditto, you should only go to the lower degrees the more specialised tuning you have 8-)

I build standard or mildly tuned engines at 19 degrees now. A couple of years ago I did put a 100% original SX150 back together with its original 1960's timing setting. It is still running really well. Wether there will be any long term problems I don't know but the owner does very low annual mileage.
