On my latest rebuild - an Li 150 Special, I fitted a new Indian speedo and a grey cable. I was very careful when fitting it all together as my Jet 200 has a similar set up and the speedo works when it feels like, and then goes on strike !. Anyway, I took the machine for an m.o.t and guess what ? - the speedo didn't work. Cut a long story short, I compared the new grey cable with an old black cable that I have. The black cable has a shoulder inside the ferrule that's fitted to the outer cable at the speedo end. This stops the inner cable ( which has a brass ring around it ) from dropping down into the outer ( assuming the cable is disconnected at the hub ). Because the inner can't drop down into the outer, there's about 10 mm of inner protruding out of the outer cable at the speedo end. What I think is happening with my grey cable ( which doesn't have a shoulder ), is that the inner is dropping down the outer too far, allowing it to go a little further into the drive at the hub end. Because there's only a couple of mil protruding from the outer at the speedo end, this is obviously not driving the speedo. I took the ferrule off my black cable and fitted it to the grey one along with it's inner cable. I tested it with a cordless drill ( set on reverse ), and the speedo works fine now. I suppose I could have cut the outer cable ( on the grey cable ) at the speedo end to make it shorter. This would have made more of the inner protrude at the speedo end and had the same effect. One to watch out for if you're changing your speedo cable.
