just took off my side casing li ser3 because i thought the bushes were worn but it turns out the boss had split and was causing the kickstart shaft to rock
is it worth getting it welded back together or is it just showing up a weakness in the bass an it will just fail again in another spot

Hi
I'm currently having two side casings welded up that have the same fault as yours. I have'nt had a price for the welding/ machining yet but I'm not expecting it to be cheap.... My advice would be unless your side case is rare or special in some way just buy a new one & swap your parts over... Maybe try to sell your old one on ebay, perhaps to someone who wants a blanked off side case.
Mark.
PS when you've got the kick start shaft out have a good look at it to make sure it's not the root of your side case problems...

suspect it is when i lost some travel on my kickstart if it didntstart in the shed i would put a brick under 1 of the stand feet to get a longer kick so was probably kicking at an angle against the boss

I’ve had one welded but can’t face the ‘dressing’ of the weld so that the spring et cetera can be re-fitted. I will try & incorporate some kind of steel sleeve around the boss but inside of the spring to add strength.
I believe that crankcase may have suffered as the result of what was once ‘essential’ in having a high compression motor, with a high (TV200) first gear & a short kick-start lever that, being SII loaded up the kick-start shaft axially more than radially.
