top end

Postby kennystag » Tue Mar 01, 2016 10:19 am

Hi All,
I am going to dissect my top end, sending the barrel away for a rebore, piston, new head etc. etc. What I would like to know, is there enough room to do this in situ, in the lammy, or is it a hassle, any tips that would assist me would be helpful .

It can be done in situ with no problems, easier if it's at working height on a workbench even easier if the engine is out and in a special jig on the worktop! If the engine is still in the frame take rear foot boards off, remove rubber bump stop, remove rear shock and gently lower rear of scooter down. You'll have plenty of room to remove carb, silencer and top end now.

Or if you are still struggling and can't get the bump stop out, I put a jack under the engine, around the engine bolt area. Then I remove the engine bolt and carefully lower the jack. This gives me room to slide the cowl and barrel off. The reverse is to carefully jack the engine up and if you do it right, the engine bolt lines up without all that awkward grovelling on the floor with 3 hands.

Thanks Scooter Paul. I do have a scooter work bench at a nice height that I will be using , and a proper engine jig, but I have a engine on it for a rebuild , but I cannot be fecked taking the engine out of the scoot if I can avoid it. Paulnobodyimportant thanks, yes I was thinking about taking the mounts pin out, and letting the engine drop a bit for better access. I will let both of you know how I get on.
Cheers

You should manage without having to remove the engine bolt as already suggested. The bump stop rubber should be removed though to increase space.

Possibly the trickiest part will be the gudgeon pin removal & refitting. If you can, do both jobs with the piston fitted in the bore as the cylinder will suport the piston & stop it flopping about like a Beer Monster with a shortage of Viagra.

You've had good advice but I would add that if you do have to remove the engine bolt, come the time to reassemble, fitting the rear shock absorber back on first helps with the realignment, if that makes sense....

Thanks Tornado,
I will feel my way about. I should really take the engine out, but I can be fecked, getting lazy in my old age. Beer Monster with a shortage of Viagra. I like it.
Cheers
