Kickstarting

Postby Chewyboy » Sat Apr 23, 2016 5:53 pm

Hi everyone
Back on the resto again but got a problem. Question is, should you be able to kickstart in gear with clutch pulled in? Mine won't. Kicks over OK in neutral... Lift up rear wheel, put in gear, pull clutch in kicks over ok not turning engine, but turns rear wheel I.e if I put rear wheel on ground and kick over in gear with clutch pulled in it moves the scoot forward but not turning engine. So... With the scoot in gear and clutch working ok and engaged what would cause the kickstart to turn the rear wheel?
Thanks in anticipation

Sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging properly. If your cable is set up correct it might just be a case of sticking plates which could free themselves when you first engage gear with the engine running. If none of these you might have to delve back in to the engine

The kick-start is spinning 1st gear directly, the clutch doesn't enter into it. You need to be in neutral. With the clutch engaged
That's if I'm understanding what you're saying.

Hi Chewyboy
Best to check out it in neutral pull clutch lever and press kick start .The kickstart should go to floor without turning engine. You may have to try several times if clutch plates are sticking. If the engine turns with clutch held in you have clutch drag so first thing to check is clutch cable adjustment.

Bit puzzled by some of the replies ?

You can only kick a Lambretta off in neutral (and start the engine).

If you pull the clutch in you disengage the kickstart from the crankshaft/cylinder.

If in gear with clutch engaged and use the kickstart you will drive the gearbox/hub/wheel but not the cylinder.

basically it sounds as though your scooter is working as it should.

My bag I'm afraid. Misunderstood original post and went down a rabbit hole. Apologies.
