oh cock

Postby swissdean » Wed Jun 22, 2016 12:59 pm

as James May would say...I managed to remove the holding nut of the crank but have hub extractor fully wedged/stuck in (serveta motoplat) flywheel, not budging so cut the top off and plan now is to go and find a car gear/hub puller to go over back of flange and see if this will pull it off? tried heat, lots of wd40, not sure the puller will work even if I can find one...i suspect the units is now scrap too..even so have to remove it to fit a new one..any other ideas out there? I ave never had this issue before

Hi Swissdean
In a similar predicament with an Indian flywheel I filed two flats on some stout coach bolts so that the head of bolt would go through flywheel holes then turned bolts 90 degrees.A thick bar that won't bend with two holes for the bolts is then placed across the flywheel nut(or two flat bars edge on with coach bolt between bars).Tighten the nuts on the bolts and with luck, some heat and a sharp tap on the bar over the flywheel nut and it might release,This will only work if you can remove puller and refit flywheel nut on a few turns
If you can't get puller out the thick bar will have to bear on either side of flywheel via something( wooden blocks perhaps) as you tighten coach bolts.
Good luck

It’s not completely clear from the image as to whether the puller has any of its external hexagon left! However, if so, a proper impact gun should rattle that off.

If you can do that, attack the bore again with penetrating oil.

Leave for as long as possible before heating, but there’s the rub. You either heat up gently the whole flywheel with the kind of butane torch most of us have access to, or, preferably, some very localised intense heat right in toward the taper area with something such as oxy-acetylene. Allow to cool, apply more penetrating oil then try another extractor.

BTW. For the record, WD-40 is the trademark name of a ‘penetrating oil and water-displacing spray’.
Penetrating oil is……penetrating oil. It is a far better, single purpose product than a dual purpose remedy, IMHO. ;)

update, tried the old trick of stuffing tow rope in the piston hole and this freed it up, new puller borrowed, timing set to 18 BTDC and now the sodding thing won't pull much above 1/4 throtlle dispite the same kit (Cylinder, piston/rings, carb, and filter) coming from another bike and being a straight lift,.I love these little challenges! now driving to the Euro, hate doing that

Thanks for everyones advice
