could someone tell me the length of this (missing) item for a mate's engine rebuild, ta

I seem to remember they're 8-10mm shorter than a Ser 3. Why not use a Ser 3 one with the Ser 1 top cap? It's harder to fit but stops the ramps jumping

If you upgrade to the taller spring you will also need the deeper crankcase cover.

my mate would like to keep it as original if possible so was curious as to the different length needed as we only have series 3 to hand

Fitting a longer spring wont make any difference to the length of the drive assembly,the spring will be compressed more making it stiffer.

I am the person looking at this Series 1 engine at present, The situation I have is that the original Spring has a length of 29mm and when re fitting the Top Cap starts to engage on the splines and tightens up very quickly which means the Spring can be rotated very easy. Am I correct in thinking that I should have more compression on the Spring similar to a Series 3 engine, Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

These are the symptoms of a series one spring being incorrectly fitted to a later set up. Possibly a mixture of early and later parts? On the face of it a series three type spring would be better. You shouldn't be able to twist the spring once properly tightened down. If you buy a new Indian spring you may have to lightly Dremmel the inside of the spring to get the top hat to sit in it but no dramas otherwise.
