Kinda urgent gearbox question...

Hi

Replacing my gearbox after a little issue and found the new one although sold to me as an Li 150 gearbox has a cluster without the central hole for my Li type pressure plate? Hoping to get this sorted by Shipston, so is it okay if I can get an engineers to drill the cluster to suit the pin, or is that a daft idea? I could convert to GP style but that means new chaincase cover etc I think. Or has anyone got an Li 150 cluster they could let me have. Any ideas?

Thanks

W

Cut the guide rod off the back of the pressure plate. Before that double check what the gearbox is though.

Late Li are like that just cut the pin off the back of the clutch flange.

You'd have a hard job drilling the cluster I think seem to think I read somewhere they're very hard

Cut it. It wont be a problem. You'll never drill it.

Hi , just a word of caution if you do cut the spindle off ,it can cause the clutch to " drag or ride " because the spindle helps centralise the clutch bell when using the clutch hope this helps. al ;)

Thanks gentlemen, I knew you'd have the answer. I'll check the gearbox first and then cut the pin.

See you at Shipston.

^... true but none of the later pre-GP ones had the spindle and they coped perfectly well. I agree that the early spindle type is better, as is the GP type, but the spindle-less LI type are fine and wil happily allow thousands of trouble-free miles before causing slightly increased wear rates.

If you don't want to cut the spindle off then get yourself a pressure plate that doesn't have one as standard (still plenty of these around and probably available new from many dealers).

Just to round this one off, firstly thanks so much for your input gentlemen, invaluable as always. I tried removing the pin/spigot but sadly it seems to be made out of Kryptonite and my efforts trying to cut it off were to no avail. Anyway, at Adam's suggestion I found I could get one easily (although a bit shabby) from one of my usual dealers without the pin and bar a little clutch plate shuffling to get the slip/drag connundrum solved it all works fine, A little stiff, which I put down to the new SIL sliding dog, but functions well enough for me.

Thanks again

Warren

I have recent experience of a SIL sliding dog bought from a reputable dealer. My gear change was stiff. I tried to convince myself that it would be OK. It wasn't. I replaced it with a good quality Italian sliding dog and it then became a pleasure to ride again.

IMO, don't suffer a stiff and notchy gearchange ;)

I've put one on my wishlist, for next time I go delving in the geabox area, thanks again.
