Hi all , i've just rebuilt a motor and thought all was spot on torqued up and shimmed etc, back in the bike and go to start it kickstart very stiff and not returning gave it a few kicks to try and start it , more out of frustration i think, then stopped sat down beside the scoot for a relax smoke and notice a hairline crack on the polished casing at cush drive so casing back off and yes damage as if the cush drive made a bid for freedom through my casing,so why did this happen, whats wrong and how do i fix this?thanks Lammer205

Could be you didn't seat the retainer on the splines properly and therefore when you thought you were torqued up you had actually just tightened up against the spring.

Mate of mine did this a few weeks ago and he got the case welded up and replaced the cush and its fine.

mate of mine had his bolt wear thru the side casing whilst on the coast to coast ... riding some 10 yds behind him, I thought I saw something fall off his bike but didn't take any notice. 50 yds later and he stops and we notice a neat hole in the side casing ... game over !

Yep cush drive not seated properly in my haste to get this running , now i need a new cush drive and also sort the casing out , thanks Lammer205.

Used JB Weld when i did the same and put a crack in my casings.....Just done Kelso, Newark and Cleethorpes and no leaks or problems.

when i fit the cush drive,i tighten up just enough so you can still turn the drive assembly washer by hand, then very lightly tap the washer with a hammer (not a rubber or plastic hammer) turning it at the same time, you will feel/hear it locate properly.it will all so feel springy/bouncy when located,then tighten up properly,
