Rooting through my garage, I came across a series 3 fuel tank that looked really clean inside when I bought it at a parts fair. After using it for a couple of years, I noticed that bits were coming away from the internal sides. It had obviously been coated, and this was failing. Apart from just trying to get the loose stuff out (it's extremely hard), is there any way of recovering from this?

Just elbow grease basically. I have done it in the past by filling the tank with nuts and bolts and shaking it violently. That will get most of it out. No guarantee it will shift it all though. So probably best just to do a physical inspection every now and then thereafter.

I have had to do this on a Diablo tank. The only substance I found to work was Tankcare Products's petseal remover. Even then it breaks off in big chunks and is hard to get out.

You could speak to Frost's auto products about using a POR15 kit. One of the processes involves a strong acid that will probably remove the loose petseal and then the POR15 sealer will cover the remainder.

Doesn't sound like it's worth the hassle. It's only going on ebay!

That's true a POR15 kit will cost you around £40.
