I'm thinking of putting panel locks on a gp, anyone know what the best position is for these, I want to make sure of the correct position before I drill the holes.

Whenever I’ve fitted panel locks, I’ve used this type (depicted) as a ‘pair’ that has the same key & preferably ‘hand-able’ so one is CW (Clockwise) & the other ACW.



My personal opinion is that they look ‘right’ central with the rear frame badge, just behind the seat.




They also go central within the panel face that is in-between the top edge & the main panel surface.

You can get security allen bolts with a raised stud that need an allen key with a central hole to fit over stud

Whether or not panel locks are chosen depends on more than just security.

Although I was aware of the discrete, hidden type, I fitted mine as an addition to the aesthetic appeal, in my attempt(!) to emulate what I had in the 70’s

I’m sure we have common ground, though, in that we’ve both responded to the question....

Thanks For the replies, I am planning to use the same ones as Tornado no 1, I've got an old panel with more holes in than a sieve so I'll try it on that first and see if it's worth it or not

Before you go drilling holes , look on ebay for hole metal hole punches lot better , you drill a small hole then use the punch screw in with and allen key cuts a perfect hole with less damage to the metal of your panel, also get your locks from..........."Locks on line" , much cheaper and better quality than dealers ,

I borrowed one from an electrician, as the holes made are so neat, as mick094m says

I've not got a lock to hand but from memory the threaded part on the back isn't round, the height is greater than the width which stops the lock from moving.

Yes they usually have a flat on either side.

The ones I have are round thread (obviously!) with four flat sides, but I can't remember where I , ahem, 'acquired' them from. It's worth hunting out a 'key-alike' pair though to save fiddling about with two different keys.



Key needs to be removable in either 'locked' or 'unlocked' position as well, preferably. I suppose that makes them 'non-handable' thinking about it

A rotation of 90º is enough.....
