no first gear selection

Postby mr mugello » Sun Mar 12, 2017 8:12 pm

Just replaced a 4 plate clutch , cork and inner steel plates, all standard. Not able to select first gear by handlebar control. Will select if by pushing gear selector bar on engine by hand. Can get into second ok. I have tried adjusting the gear selector screws. Clutch is a fair bit harder to pull in on the lever compared to last clutch, but seems to bite ok. Springs are the old ones used, heights all the same. Gear selector rod is at 90 degrees in second gear as mentioned in stickys manual. Not removed gearbox on clutch change. Clutch did show very small slight gap when compressed but had use fair bit of force on clutch compressor. Any help what the cause could be . Thanks

Thanks hxpaul. Just had a look. The only thing I could see was my clutch lever is at 90 degrees, maybe a slight couple of degrees even forward. Will adjust further back tomorrow. Would this issue alone stop first gear engaging. I had fitted rubber gaitors, but cut these down before posting issue by half as the far side looked maybe causing issue. Doing this gave a slight movement towards engaging first, but causing a slight crunching and no engagement. I did not put clutch together originally. If clutch lever has no effect, what would be next thing to check or change as I mentioned before that only changed corks and steels, Scootopia's own standard size own brand.

If you've checked that link and nothing jumps out at you,I dont know what else could be causing the problem.I would get rid of the rubber gaitors altogether, their nothing but trouble. If your running a later model with plastic gear pulleys and pins instead of splined pulleys in the headset,Check that the rawl pin hasn't come out slightly causing it to catch on something in the heaset and not allowing you to select first gear. This can also be a problem if the rawl pin has been replaced by a bolt that is to long.
