Oil %

Postby P D: SC Chester » Fri Mar 24, 2017 11:27 pm

I was chatting to an old school scooterist today, and I mentioned that I was using 4% on my Lammy. He said he thought it was too much, so as I had to fill up anyway, I used 3%.
Not thinking it would make much difference, I set off home and remarkably top speed increased at full tilt on a flat road with no headwind.
I couldn't say it was the oil, but performance did seem improved, without any tinkering by me ( been jetting).
Now can oil to fuel ratio make a difference, or did I just plumb lucky?

No.

It can't make any discernible difference unless you use way too little (seize) or way too much (carb blocks/oily smoke etc).

Sorry for the contradiction, but the oil mix ratio does have an effect upon the carburation, but whether the difference between three & four % would be the cause of your increase in performance, I don’t know.

You will have enriched the carburation by using less oil.

Adding more oil effectively weakens the carburation, which is precisely why you shouldn’t do so as an aid to ‘running in’

Thanks lads, when I have been putting 4% in it did seem like a lot and any spit back was very oil rich.
Scoot does seem to be running crisper after another run out today.

And what a day for scooting, it was glorious here in the North West...
