Just stripped the top end on my missus GP and it looks like it might have had a small nip up in the past, nothing too drastic. What's the best way to clean up the sides of the piston and few small marks in the barrel?

If it's an iron barrel use some brick acid to try and take the ali piston deposits away, then either wet and dry with a lubricant moving down grades as required, or a 3 legged glazed buster (carefully). Take your time.
Clean the piston up with fine wet and dry and lubricant, carefully so you don't create flat spots.

Thoroughly clean, new rings (gapped) hey presto good to go.

A satisfying job for some reason I have always thought.

That's what I would do

I have used brick acid to clean parts of my engine casings, don't under-estimate this stuff it is brilliant/ strong and £10 a gallon from B & Q. Should do the job.

Does it get your finger nails as clean as making pastry by hand

Seriously, I've never heard of it being used for barrel cleansing, but it sounds a great idea

Great for cleaning the rust from the inside of an old petrol tank.

Brick acid works a Treat in petrol tanks but don't do what I did and let it drip on the concrete floor of the garage it rots it .
very strong stuff !
