The combo starting to run badly and did not sound right on the way to Larling. This is why

What have you done to it?

Did all the fixing points line up okay? Could it be that the swan neck attachment was under stress because it did not line up with the connections at the stub and tailpipe?

It would be interesting to gain the manufacturer’s opinion on the failure because the steel has fractured in a way that you would expect only high carbon steel could!

It appears brittle as if work hardened through heat, not strain, much like you might expect of cast iron...

Mine did the same thing but on the underside of the box. It was under no stress at all but had been loose for about 100 miles.

It was nowhere near as bad as that and I managed to get it welded before it went completely.

Replaced by Scooter-centre, but disappointing considering. I was relieved I hadn't had it coated as that isn't covered in the Warranty. Anyone ever had this happen on an AF clubman?

I lost a tailpipe on a French motorway and, yes, in hindsight the steel did fracture in that sort of "sharp" fashion.

That said, whilst I had fettled the exhaust to suit a 115 conrod, with hindsight, there was still a pull on the tailpipe. Only slight though.

All welded up and still being used though.

My original V1 has lastest very well, but the later versions seem to have had problems fracturing in various places.Hence the new design and manufacturer I guess....Just off to the post office to collect my V4 ...

looking at the pictures it's not a design problem but there being made with the wrong type of steel

That's a bit worrying, will have to check mine tonight (V2), mine is loud but put that down to the baffles being shot to pieces!

yeah, I have... AF one disintegrated on the way to the IOW a couple of years ago. Tail pipe gone, main bracket gone and it was literally just hanging on by the studs!

I've used AF clubman exhausts for years and never seen one go like this. I've had them have issues with age through rust, but never had one so new have a "terminal" failure. Worst I've experienced is the tailpipe bracket snapping on a twin pipe. Now I appreciate that they don't perform as well......

Makes me think that it is soft Chinese steel, there are exhausts on lambrettas 40 years and older still going strong. No disrespect meant to manufacturers.
