just taken the mag housing off,to take the crank out .the grease in the housing is jet black ,and some grease is in the inner oilseal on the crankside.plus a bit on the crank.new seals and bearing about 700 miles ago.is it likely that my grease is not high melting point ,as it is supposed to be.any ideas please.

It could be, I have looking for some more HM grease (my stock from my working days is almost out :( ) and some of the so called high melting point grease ranges are 130 degrees.

I’d be inclined to check that the inner seal is not leaking allowing contamination via the petroil (within the bottom end) getting to the magneto area.

The roller bearing shouldn’t get that hot to cause problems with any grease, if you think about it, although the rotation of the bearing will cause some heat on its own. After all, the seals are only made of some kind of rubber & they do melt if things get too hot in there!
