Boys / Girls -- techo help needed please? Gear change is loose as on the S3, can get all gears but too much play. To adjust the tension in the cables & lessen the play is it the same method as other cables with the adjusters & if so is there any method to it (what 1 first etc) -- Cheers G

What you have too rember is,"front to back,back too front"meaning the cable that is at the front on your headset will be at the back on top of your engine.Use the adjusters,as for adjusting them everyone does it differently,this is how I do it.I always adjust the cables when the scooter is in neutral.I adjust each cable making sure the arrow on the headset always points to the neutral position.

Set the pointer to where you want I.e.neutral 1st or 4th then wrap some masking tape around it,to hold it in the desired position.

This might just help anybody in the future adjusting gear cables:

• Set bike in neutral & figure out which cable, if any, needs tensioning the most to bring handlebar lever neutral in line (if it is out of register @ all)
• Back off the adjustment of both adjuster screws except leave about one whole turn
• Before making any adjustment, clamp mole grips just tight enough (not to flatten cable) a nat’s away from the pivoting arm.
• Slacken the grub screw using appropriate (normally 8mm AF) spanner & hexagon key/socket
• Insert long nose pliers (with the cable loosely between the jaws) between the mole grips & the pivoting arm & push so that the taper pulls the cable through. Keep an eye on the handlebar lever neutral for a guesstimate.
• Tighten the grub screw back up again using spanner & hexagon key/socket
• Repeat procedure for the other cable

You should now have reasonably taught cables. You may have to fine tune to ensure neutral is spot on @ the handlebar lever. Beware of going too tight as gear selection will be difficult.

A cycle inner cable tensioner does the job well too.

What do you do for for stiff gears, is it the same process but in reverse.
The problem I had a few weeks ago, was that I couldn't get 4th gear whilst riding. So adjusted all the gears and tightened up the clutch as well. Now I get all gears when the bike is stationary with the engine switched off but when running it's a two handed job to get it in to first, which can only be done at a stop. Any ideas please
