slight clutch cable rub

My clutch failed at lights last night - on inspection the outer was completely severed and the inner down to one strand. I guess it had been rubbing...

Was only a few miles from home so managed to get back and fit new cable

I run the cable coming through the headset correctly from the RHS, through the clip and over the rod to enter the clutch lever housing ahead of the rod.

I wouldn't want this happening again - is there something I might be missing?

Thanks - Andrew

It could be that the outer cable was pulled too tight causing it to rub on the shaft. I always coat both the shaft and the outer cable with grease where they may come into contact. There should be a loop as per the picture below.

Thanks Landy.

I've kept it loose and greased the shaft...

and tested at various positions.

I'll see how it goes and check it in a weeks time. I recall reading somewhere that people dremmel the hole bigger, but I thought that was for the busy throttle side where the LX and cable are fighting.

You can find some good advice in Sticky's book with regard to fettling the headset casting to give your outer cable an easier time. Well worth doing.

I agree with the Dremel mod,but also note that the new nylon lined cables are thicker and less plyable so are more likely to chafe especially going into 4 th gear.
