Battery Drain Through Stator???

I have a Casatronic ignition kit that has a DC 12V trickle charge wire. I fitted a battery to run my SIP Speedo, all works fine. This charging output of the regulator is connected to the Battery positive terminal. The power to the SIP speedo is switched via the ignition key, so Isolated when off.

The scooter was left for about 2 weeks and the battery was completely flat, the only potential load (speedo) was off via the switch. Is it possible that the battery is draining back via the regulator or even the stator?

you may have something that is causing it to drain, easy check is to disconnect the earth wire from the battery, then put a multimeter between the battery earth terminal and the earth wire, if you have any voltage then you have a problem, obviously your battery needs to be charged to test this, also batteries dont last for every just sat on a scooter or motorcycle, especialy in cold weather, a battery conditioner is a good idea, you plug it in and leave it connected via a multi-plug, and it adds a little voltage when needed to keep the battery fully charged.

Sorry holty I should have also stated that I checked for current leakage using a multimeter as yo describe and there was none evident...

I agree with your battery life statement but would have thought a brand new battery would have been ok for 3-4 weeks especially in this weather

If there was no current leaking then your battery is duff.

You've just been unlucky that's all.

the other option is than the amount of power being taken from the battery is exeeding the amount being put back in it, which i would doubt if its only a speedo running off it,so it will always end up flat, unless the battery is just faulty? which looks like the most likely option, maybe try disconnecting the battery when not in use if it still goes flat that will confirm the battery is duff.

This article might help a few people. It explains how you can keep the SIP speedo lit without needing a battery. Organising a switched battery connection (so you can turn all the accessories off with the ignition) on an AC scooter is much more complicated than simply using an Intelli-Converter to power your 12V DC accessories.

Maybe a dumb question (or not) but you don't have anything else connected, for example a usb charger?

I bought a BGM Pro USB charger which had a small LED light and that would run my battery dry in 2 weeks even with daily use, someone else I know also bought one and had the same experience. So that went in the bin and I replaced it with a cheap USB charger from Amazon that had an on/off switch and no LED light and that has been as good as gold. I did give some feedback to MB but was told that nobody else had reported any issues...but looks as though these have now been removed from their online shop, but Scooter Center still sell them;

You won't read any voltage doing that, you need to have the meter set to amps Start on a hi amperage scale and then switch down to miliamps. Most meters require you to move one of the leads to another socket to test amps.....DO NOT forget to put it back before you use it to test volts

I have a usb charger with a neon light that I didn't realise stayed on when the rubber cover was fitted... this drained my battery. I now have a simple fuse box for different connections so I simply remove the fuse when not in use.

Could you explain how you have wired the battery feed into the ignition switch and out to the Sip speedo from the ignition switch.

I am assuming an S3 type switch and I have just looked at a diagram for that and can't see how this would work ?

I bought a burglar alarm 12 v, 2.1a battery . I made a bracket and secured the battery with Velcro straps.
I then wired the battery charge output from the rectifier, to the battery positive terminal via a 1.5A in line fuse.
I wired the battery negative terminal to a earth wire attached to the earthing point on the frame.
I then ran a wire to the headset via another 1.5A fuse from the battery positive terminal

I was given an old ignition switch (turns out its actually a Beedspeed ACDC switch) I used a multimeter to work out the switch positions, connected the positive battery wire as the power input, and the wire that corresponds to fully clockwise as the switched power feed to the SIP power unit.

I also connected the green kill wire to the switch so I can turn off the engine when the key position is "off", as I have replaced the button with the switch.

So I turn the key fully clock wise, the speedo fires up powered by the battery, and is unaffected by lights or low revs.

@ Burnside - I did have a USB adapter connected via a MODCHARGER, that has a LED in it, hidden in the toolbox. I have disconnected the adapter completely now and hope that was the cause - I will update this thread in a couple of weeks.

I have used one of Anthony's IntelliConverters on the road to Italy and back to power my satnav on a AC equipped scooter. It was perfect.

Mr T is a clever man, and has a new product coming along which will be a game changer in a new area.
