I have a taxed scooter, but the MOT and insurance have lapsed. It is not going back on the road just yet, as I have other projects on the go.

I know some rules have changed in the last few years, but can I be fined for no insurance even though the scooter is not on the road?

Would it be best to SORN it?

From experience..............Yes you would be fined for no insurance........

My argument that a mechanic, who had insurance cover, was fixing it and needed to road test it (so couldn't SORN it), gained me sympathy from DVLA......and a £100 fine.

Sorn it, takes all the ifs and buts away and its easy to sorn and then tax again at a later date

You get threatening letters followed by a fine from MID now if your vehicle does not have insurance and isn't SORN'd, so yes SORN it

I would still insure it for fire and theft if it were mine. I did this when I was rebuilding mine. no problem with the insurance company as long as you give tell them what you are doing.

So... Have I got this right?
You can be prosecuted for having no insurance on a vehicle that is taxed, but isn't on the public highway?
Persecuted I would except. There is always some tosser who will try to demand monies with menaces.
As for Prosecuted, I'm not sure how a judge of good standing would view that.
I wonder if anyone has pursued this through the courts and how they faired?

Yep you got it right. makes no sense to me either.

I have reverse situation. Scooter currently insured but is with a dealer being fixed.Tax ran out end of june also mot,while at dealer.Will send him an email so he can put on trade plates if hes got any.I spose no mot invalidates the insurance tho?

If you look up SORN on the gov.uk website it says you should declare it if you do not want to pay tax and insurance. It should be kept off the public roads ie kept in garage, on drive, or private land . Any remaining tax will be refunded although I don't know if the amount we pay comes into it but why not?

If it is on SORN you do not have to insurance it. So if it is not being used on a public highway then you just need to get it SORN'd.
