I'm fitting a new set of Bgm dampers with the Bgm brackets today.
My question is, Do I need to extend the shock a little when I'm fitting it? Or do fit it straight on without trying to extend it? I'm bit of a novice at this damper lark. I'm just thinking about the travel when braking. When heavy braking applied I'm thinking that the shock may bottom out due to the short rebound.

The most important function of dampers for the Lambretta are their ability to control rebound. Although they damp the compression, it is only by a small amount.

Fitted to the forks, they can transform the handling as they discourage the oscillation of the undamped suspension.

You might be complicating things a little concerning the fitting of them, but presuming the fork link mountings are in the usual, standard position, the top mounts should be in the usual place for damped forks.

If you don't have that information, I'll measure it for you on forks I have here.

Thank's for your reply and information. I'm using the Bgm brackets. If you could measure the gap between the bottom mount to the bottom of the top bracket that would be great. At least then I can gauge any travel in the shock(If any) wheni have the correct measurement. Thanks

I checked three machines, all of them with absolutely no load on the front end as the wheels were off the ground.

The distance I have measured is the centres from the top eye to the bottom eye, which are the pivot points of the damper.

All forks are genuine OEM but the buffers fitted @ the bottom vary.

SX200 = 240 mm
Serveta = 245 mm
GP = 220 mm

That last one was a bit of a shock TBH & I would use the 240 mm if I were you.

Finally, the first set of naked forks that came to hand have a distance from the bottom of the boot of 10-1/2” (267 mm) to centre of the top eye.
