Stainless steel petrol tanks

Had a lengthy conversation with Ben at Rayspeed the other day, one of the topics we covered was running without an air filter and possible accelerated wear of cylinder plating, Ben was saying he'd not seen any appreciable difference in wear running without BUT he was saying the biggest plating killer is the use of stainless long range tanks and the problem was all the internal crap left after welding manufacture and abrasive from the polishing process and the fact that over the years they have seen and rebuilt numerous engines damaged in this way.

Anyone on here experienced similar problems?

Surely it can't be to far from the realms of reality for tank manufacturers to ensure the thing is clean before going on sale?

I would think most would just try and make outside as shiny as possible and not worry about inside. I had a steel diablo one and cleaned it out until I thought it was spotless. Had it in at Rayspeed for a problem and Ben said there were bits in carb filter and to keep an eye on it. Makes you wonder were shite comes from. Trying the Oiltek one next

a good swill out and an inline disposable filter should do the trick , i always fit an inline filter and as big as i can fit , so not to restrict the fuel flow.

In line filters, in my view a nightmare waiting to happen, no get it clean and keep it clean then you won't need one "papering over the cracks" are inline filters.

Rayspeed have been toting that old chestnut around for years. Maybe... Just maybe, there was once a rogue tank that escaped the inscrutable Vietnamese quality control? ;) Highly unlikely that it is an endemic problem though.
However.......running a cylinder without an air filter, which has its carb on the right is a recipe for disaster.
Think about it!!!!!!!!
The flywheel cooling fan picks up tiny bit of road grit, which then fires them around the cylinder fins at high velocity and then exits out of the cowling right in front of where your carb breathes. :o
The easiest way to knacker a TS1 or RB is to run without a filter irrespective of what fuel tank is fitted.

I see where your coming from with this and makes perfect sense.
