So, only got 150 miles on the running in on the gt186 post rebore and build and was fine until the next day when it was dead.

Had compression so checked spark, none at the plug, tried all the usual including new plug, cap, lead, even the spare cdi, still no spark.
Thought there was no spark off the green on the stator until I pushed it into the dimly lit shed and voila there was one, but still nothing from the cdis, so new one ordered and guess what......no spark!

So, am in the middle of swapping out the stator from the mugello engine and hope to god it works!!

And of course it does, first kick, so while I now have no spare reliable stator i have 2 spare cdi's and caps lol

So, given that the stator readings are all ok, and are within literally a few ohms of the working one whats my next step to repair it ie is it more likely to be pick up or the LT?

Back off to the shed to reset the timing now!

Typical of a failing stator I'm afraid Donnie, so often giving correct readings but not working correctly. Sure, duff readings show a stator to have failed, however, correct readings certainly don't mean that all is well.

I replaced a faulty one with a brand new one. Put it in started first kick, reset the timing; still started first kick. Cup of tea and put everything back and loblocks. .... Wouldn't start !!!
No spark. Replaced everything else and lo and behold the new stator was duff despite all readings within range.
Repaired the original with new LT coil.
Waiting on the new crowd funded one from Mr Tambs.

I'ved advised on this in other threads as have many others.
New stators ain't worth jack unless the LT coil is reworked properly
The failure rate out there is atrocious. Don't do it.

This is only my second stator issue in 20 years to be fair so dont subscribe to that to be honest. Ive ordered a new one anyway and will have a go at replacing the pick up on the old one, never done it before but nothing to lose.

Have a REALLY good look at the soldering on the stator and also check that the earth tag on the laminates is good and tight. If you are testing the LT coil with a meter on ohms, try gently tapping the coil with something non conductive and see if the needle remains steady.

Shall give that a go
