New Layshaft

Rebuilding my Indian GP200 engine and I have found the layshaft to be pitted on the bearing face next the the end plate
It's not a high horse power engine (sub 20hp), so nothing exotic required
Whats the advice buying a new layshaft?
Am I OK to buy a ebay, claimed to be genuine SIL, one. Like this one for example
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/182747490180?chn=ps&dispItem=1&adgroupid=42943801829&rlsatarget=pla-325061871489&abcId=1128936&adtype=pla&merchantid=113520990&poi=&googleloc=9045598&device=c&campaignid=856327663&crdt=0Or am I better off spending the extra for a remade Italian one, like the Tutto one Scootopia have?

Such a critical part in your motor I would pay the extra, just my opinion though.
Good luck with your decision.

Yes good point
How about fitting - is there anything I should be aware of, when buying an Italian remade layshaft. Just visited one online shop that listed a Casa and Tutto layshaft, same price. Anyone got an opinion on the quality and fit of either?

I've just fitted a Casa into a new GT casing, a excellent quality layshaft, excellent fit. I was surprised on the price very reasonable.

I bought a 'genuine SIL in packaging ' kickstart shaft of fleabay - fitted nowhere.
For you want SIL try somewhere like SR, or go for Scootopia etc.

I am looking for a new layshaft.
The last new layshaft I bought was best part of ten years ago and it was SIL. It’s still in use on my TS1 to this day and my natural inclination is to buy another from a reputable dealer.
Since I bought the last SIL layshaft, however, I have had issues with a poorly machined SIL kickstart shaft and SIL sliding dog which makes me think that the machining in recent years has been a bit hit and miss.
Does anyone have any fairly recent feedback on SIL layshafts ?

Ive used SIL stuff for years with no problems - found layshaft, sliding dogs, G/Boxes, clutch parts etc excellent quality, but alas now I don't believe that much is "genuine".
When SR have ran out genuine SIL stuff and cant replenish them (layshafts, sliding dogs) for me that's them gone and those on ebay are more than likely fake.
SIL cant be making anything now ?

I think you’re right, Gaz. I don’t think they have made Lambretta parts for a couple of years, at least. And, yes, I did notice that SR had no stock but then I also saw Scooter Center have ones for sale for 50E which have a SIL logo next to them.
It is plausible that there are SIL stocks around but then, I suppose, even main dealers could be duped if they aren’t dealing with SIL direct.
I suppose I am answering my own question here. It’s probably not worth the risk of buying one.
PS. I never buy parts on eBay except for original Innocenti if I want them. The cynic in me believes that “not quite right” parts find their way onto eBay from less reputable eBay dealers. Pure speculation on my part I have to add.

Thanks, Scotty. I presume it’s this one on their site
“ Layshaft High Spec If Purchased With Clo5e Ratio Gear Box- Offer Price £45.00
£61.00
Layshaft High Spec If Purchased With Clo5e Ratio Gear Box- Offer Price £45.00”
Is that right? As luck would have it, I have a Rayspeed order arriving tomorrow

As per previous I'd only buy 'genuine SIL' from SR because I trust them to be honest about the source.
Anything else is suspect.

I would agree having had conversations with Paul at Scooter Restorations on this topic a few years ago.

when you say new designed layshaft - I'm guessing you mean just a good remade version? in the market for a new layshaft myself and that does sound a good deal price wise. Paul

Does that mean there is less messing with non standard shims or shims on the hub side?
Does it have to be / can it be used with the double row bearing?

It doesn't have to be used with double row bearing. Works fine with normal one.
I assume, but don't actually know, that it can be used with double row bearing if that's your thing.

The AF Rayspeed layshaft sure is an attractive alternative that I’m very interested in but do we know how long they have been around for trialed/tested etc? I mean casa and mb ones have been around a while now and have been proven to be good.
