Vintage exhaust - Which engine spec ?

Hi,

I've swapped my exhaust from the JL expansion chamber shown in the photo to a clubman.... scooter runs really nicely now :-)

What engine spec would suit the JL exhaust I now have in my spares collection ?
Would it need to be a tuned 200+ or could it be used on other engine builds ? - It didn't suit the power of the SR 175 kit I initially used it on.

The JL exhaust came with the scooter, which had been stored in bits for 20 odd years, so it's in good condition for it's age - should I keep it or offer it in the for sale section / eBay ?
It's dated 1990 and it's complete and in good condition.
Any idea on it's desirability and or the engine it would suit and ultimately I guess it's value ?

I may well keep it for another build, but what engine tune would suit it best ?

Thanks - jr

I don't think the 1990 refers to the year of manufacture but rather to BSAU standard to which it's supposed to comply.

Looking at the pic it looks like more of a road pipe just going by the long narrow cones.

An adult will be along shortly with a positive identification.

Hi Ross, I think you are right, I checked online and the BSAU code means it's road legal.

It's definitely mid to late 80's in manufacture as the scooter it was fitted to was taken apart and stored in the late 80's early 90's.

Interested to gain a bit more knowledge on its potential use.

It does look like a JL3 but if it's that old I guess it could be the Taffspeed original? Either way, it would suit any mildly tuned engine really so long as the gearing is altered to suit the power delivery. This is probably what was needed with your 175 conversion. They are known to have reasonable low down and mid range torque but don't rev very highly.
