Fuel tank tap

Trying to fit a scootopia fast fuel tap to my tank but the filter won't fit up the brass tube that protrudes from the tank . Would it be ok to take the filter off and fit an in line filter between the tap and the carb?

I think the brass tube that you are referring to is the filter from the original tap that you've just removed as I had the same issue recently. You need to gently pull the brass tube out with a pair of pliers and then you can fit the new tap. I had to chamfer the top of the plastic filter on the Scootopia tap very slightly for it to push into the tank, apart from that I'm really pleased with it and I like the way it clicks into the on & reserve position, I don't see what the issue is with them???

A tug with pointed pliers didn't move it , I think it's best left alone and remove the new filter???

No, you need to get it out. Is the inside of the tank badly rusted or gunged up?

Not particularly rusted not gunged . If I really need it out I could I suppose drill it out?

Whatever you do, be very careful about drilling and producing sparks where petrol has been.

And not only that,if you drill it out your going to need a filter to stop all the drillings from going into your carb.

Apologies for confusing you, I am I assure you more confused. The tank is a second hand tank I bought off fleabay and it came with a lot of rust particles inside but structurally sound.
I chucked in a load of washers and nuts and shook the hell out of it
Once i sort out this brass tube I intend to wash out with petrol before putting the tap on and installing the tank so drilling is possible or I may try a molegrips tomorrow night

Is it possible to push it through?.Into the tank and then out the filler neck,better than drilling if you can.

I reckon you’ll find it is part of the petrol tap. I also reckon you’ll discover that the inside of your tank is in a lot worse condition than you think. I suspect it is a combination of sediment, rust and gunge that is holding it in place.

Please don’t keep us in suspense too long

been doing my CbT in the pi55ing down rain and wind today so i am cream crackered , when i get a chance i will give it another go and update you all. As for pictures i have tried but keep getting response file too big- again work in progress

Good news its out :)

what i did is spray it with a bit of wd40 this morning and left it until this evening i then fed a wooden dowel down the tube so that i could secure it with a mole grips ie making it a solid item that wouldnt simply implode , three twists and out she came !!

it must have been the original filter as the tube that was inside the tank had a series of holes to allow the fuel through but not any particles.

now to give the tank a damb good clean inside - any tips??

Glad you got it out. It must need a proper clean inside.

I have done 4 tanks following this link. Be careful when doing it but it works miles better than any other method I have ever tried
