Converting GP fork buffers to LI/SX

Postby DaveTomo » Tue Dec 19, 2017 7:38 pm

Stripping a set of GP forks down for a mate & the tab that holds the bottom fork buffer in has broken/rusted off  on the one side.Is is just a case of getting a bolt in one and drilling the holes? I'm thinking, get some masking tape onto the bolt in buffer marking the holes up and then placing onto the fork- sound right? Also do I have to remove the complete buffer plate inside the fork leg or can it stay where it is. I see Scootopia do replacement buffer plates, I assume this would have to be welded in http://www.scootopia.co.uk/product/6285 ... ment-plate

I've had to do this a few years back.

Remove all the remains of the tabs.

I made a template of the bottom of the bolt in buffers and used that to position the holes to drill, pretty straight forward really.

i had the same GP forks issue a few years ago, so bought 2 of these from scootopia

drilled x2 5mm holes in the bottom of fork leg where they fit, & got a mate to use the holes to weld buffer holding plates in position
dressed up the welds, powdercoated the forks & job done ;-)

You can also drill a couple of holes in the buffer plate, then plug weld from the inside. If you hold a wet rag on the outside it will prevent burning too much paint off.
