Hi,
My engine has recently been rebuilt after complete strip down to bare cases. When it was rebuilt I renewed the clutch plates and springs also.
The problem is when I try to pull off after engaging 1st gear and release the clutch and increase throttle to start off there is no pull from the engine and the engine dies/stalls if I don't pull the clutch lever back in.

1st thing I did was adjust the clutch cable as there was a bit of slack which made no difference. Next I removed chain case to have a look inside and the first thing I noticed is there looks like gritty bits of brass in the oil that I drained out and on the inside of the chain case and block around gear box area. The only thing left in the engine that's brass is the bush in the clutch assembly that I remember. Think I need to take the clutch apart to have a further look? Thanks in advance for any help.

Some engine configurations require quite an increase in revs to pull cleanly away. Have you tried pulling away with greatly increased revs and then riding it around the block?

I did try applying more revs at the time and didn't make any difference still stalls unless I pull clutch in again.

Is the rear brake cable somehow pulling brake on when you sit on and try to ride away?

Good call -remember a mates scooter cutting out every time he sat on it took a while to figure out the ht lead had split right at the grommet on the panel hanger.

Ran fine untill he tried to set off.
Soon as it started to die de clutched and naturally took his weight back of the bike - contact remade engine ran.

gear cables wrong way round.............

When you engage first gear does the end of the selecter arm closest to the wheel move forward.
I ask because I wonder if you may have the gear cables reversed and you are trying to pull away in a higher gear that is not first gear.

Must admit it does feel like i'm trying to pull away in a higher gear. I'll check tomorrow.

When fastening your gear cable you have to remember "front to back,back to front "Meaning the cable at the front on your headset,fastens to the swivel on top of your engine nearest your back wheel.

If it's "front to back" for cable routing then engaging 1st will tighten the cable, pulling the linkage forward.....opposite to what you're saying...if i've read it correctly

Yes it is the opposite to what I said previously. So by the sound of it they are the wrong way round. Front to back would pull gear selector end nearest wheel forwards as opposed to backwards as I have currently. School boy error I think. Thanks.

Your gear cables are the wrong way around.When you put the engine in first gear,it should pull your swivel(gear change linkage) forward for first gear.

Sounds promising.
Double check: Pull the gear change at headset into first.
The arm that carries both cables at the engine end of things should have moved closer to the front of the scooter on the cable closest to the back wheel. The arm and cable closest to the side panel should have moved backwards towards the rear of the scooter.
If this is not happening, then swap them round. I really do hope thst this is your problem. .
