Cone position on layshaft

Postby LuiLui » Sun Apr 01, 2018 8:50 pm

So, rebuild finished, MOT done, V5 application sorted and registration number received.

All seemed ok, then I was flicking through Sticky’s book today and saw that when you put the cone on the rear hub the gap in the cone should sit over a spline (p166) :o

Can’t remember if I did that :? So..... if I didn’t.. how important is it??

Just when I think i’ve finished something else pops up to assist my over active paranoia :D

Think I also just want the work to stop

Cheers
Mark

i would say very important as it supports the ends of the cone and will help to keep the cone central and your drum, i would check and adjust if it were me, just to be on the safe side.

This is something we did not know to do when I was first into working on Lambrettas and we survived but since reading Sticky's book I have started doing it. If you think about it if you put the gap over a spline as the taper in the hub closes the gap it will close evenly but if it is not the one side of the gap can contact a spline as it compresses. Perhaps I think to much :)

Ok, thanks. Pretty obvious I suppose, if in doubt sort it out!

Thanks
