Hi Guys,

I've got some nice old Italian wheel rims on my Li, they look cool with the rat look and I'm keen not to swap them for shiny new ones...

I noticed when I changed the tyres that one of the rear rim studs ( attached to the rim not the hub ) is looking a bit weak on the thread, ready to strip I think....

How easy is it to changed the studs ?

Do they have a left hand thread or do they knock out on the bench ?
I'd like to avoid heat on the rim as it removes the patina .... any trick ways to swap them as the replacement studs are easy to pick up from Scooter resto's.

Thanks in advance - I'm sure it's straight forward, but prefer to check before cracking on with the job.

They should knock out, they have a square shank to stop then turning. I don't THINK they were welded in place, I robbed a stud out of a set of old rusty Italian rims as there was one missing from the replacement rims and I just put a hut on the end of the thread and tapped it out.

Yes, I have some square shank replacement new wheel rim studs in the Get You Home Spares if you need to obtain any new ones.

One thing has always puzzled me about the original square fitting studs. Originals will last for years and years. But when you refit them to a wheel they often seem to be welded in position. So how come they fitted then and they don't now?

No expert, but I assume when the rims were first made , it was all new metal , and tolerances of fit were tested and 'spot on '.. Now as things are remade and the rims have been weathered and worn ,parts will not be an 'as new' fit .
