Project Vega

Bought this Vega a couple of weeks age from someone on Face Book and Jim Rose just kindly went and fetched it from West Yorkshire for me British bike first registered in 1973 but made in 1968 apparently.



I have a query already as the side casing was only held on loosely with one nut and it is obvious that is won't go all the way on due to the kick start shaft fouling on the rear sprocket. The only way it could work is if there was a 1/2" Packer fitted Just wondering if it has the wrong chain case side fitted?


Might need another front mudguard too, looks like it has been cut?

If you haven't already, I'd recommend registering on the Luna Forum. I'd doubt you'll have any problem getting a front mudguard. There are side casings on ebay too but I have never looked closely enough as to whether they are Lui or Vega.

I had some hub nuts made up to accommodate dampers, if you're thinking of going that way

Sorry for the delay. I note from my little black book that I suffered from serious 4th gear 'lag' on the standard 125* gears and sprockets and have noted that I changed to a Vega 46 rear sprocket and J 14 tooth front, with a 75 link (half link) chain. I'm assuming that this was retaining the J125 box but can't confirm 100%. My note from the sprocket change is, "Feels pretty good in 4th with no lag.", so whatever it was seemed to work OK

I think that this simply reflects that the J's small carb, restrictive pipe and plodder porting could cope with the 5.75 4th ratio, whereas the introduction of 20mm carb and revvier pipe benefits from a lower 4th ratio to allow the motor to benefit from the additional revs... much in the same way that LI125 5.65 was lowered to 6.32 for the extended rev range and power of the LI125S/DL.

Feel free to work out the ratios to see what they might be with the various sprockets as it just might be that mine is a Vega box with the J front sprocket... I really can't remember and my note keeping doesn't seem to be up to much! I'll update this if I figure it out

OK, so I've just worked out what ratio each gearbox (Vega and J125*) would equate to with the 14 x 46 sprocket change that I have listed.

J125* (34/19) x (46/14) = 5.88:1

Vega (39/20) x (46/14) = 6.4:1

On the face of it, I don't think that I'd have bothered going to the extent/effort of fitting a half link chain to simply take me from 5.75 (standard J125*) to 5.88. Which leaves me questioning whether I have fitted the Vega box with these sprockets? An easy test for me should be looking to see if I still have my one and only J125* gearbox stashed away in the loft. If so, it aint in my Vega!

Thanks Adam - Very interesting ,sounds like you may well have the Vega box fitted.
That's good news as I was probably going that direction myself , here are my options

J Range Box - Vega Sprockets 46/13 = 6.33

Vega Box - J Sprockets 45/14 = 6.27

With Modified airbox , SH1/20 carb and standard exhaust

Both options are in the same ball park as your 6.4 but I was favouring the 14t J sprockets due to the cush drive option rather than the direct drive 13t Vega option.

Just out of interest - did you modify the standard pipe in any way ?

The other side casing arrived and has the same part number as the one in your photo so I'm assuming there are 2 different side casings. Not able to check at the mo as I've 'burried' the Vega under DIY materials until the 'right moment' presents itself to the wife

The shallow casing as shown on the Vega is a 3 speed one as they have a less raised endplate compared to a 4 speed motor.
