1955 Model D150 (Version 2) - Rear lamp lens and surround

Postby Big Al » Sun Nov 15, 2015 11:02 pm

I want to re-use these parts but need to separate the red lens from the metal surround, so that I can get the surround re-chromed. Any suggestions how I do this without breaking the red lens please?

How about a photo of what you have? My '55 had a small round taillight with no embedded chrome trim.

It's the same as this one, on the Cambridge Lambretta Workshop website, for all Ds.

On the CLW website it says: all D models and LD mark one and two.

I think it should just pop out?

New lenses are cheap, MUCH cheaper than getting the original surround rechromed.

The red lens rotates in its groove/seating, and looks as though it should push outwards, rather than into the metal housing, but it is very tight in the groove.

Is re-chroming the original metal housing likely to cost more than £40 (the cost of a new unit) for this small item?

I once had one of those - it looked as if the metalwork was crimped after the lens was inserted. Not sure how the chrome plating was applied, though.....

Thanks Steve. I think you're right. I've been told this week that the metal on mine is so thin (with minor splits in a couple of places), that it might break completely even after re-chroming, so I've now bought a new one for rather less than £40.

I could try taking the original CEV red lens out of the old one, and putting it in the new one, but I think I will accept defeat on this one! Will it matter? Maybe to the purists, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
