1955 Model D150 (V.2) - Steering lower bearing protection

Postby Big Al » Mon Nov 30, 2015 5:11 pm

The lower steering bearing cover was painted over when my scooter was last resprayed, but I understand it would have originally been chromed.

If I remove the handlebars and release the upper ball race, will the forks pull out of the tube with the lower assembly still in place in the tube? If so, once I have released the lower ball race assembly, how does the "chromed" protection cover come off? Should I just tap it downwards?

Any help with dismantling and re-assembling the lower ball race assembly would be great, as neither of my Lambretta books are very clear on this. Thanks.

From studying the parts manual again, it looks as though the Lower Cone fits down onto the base of the front forks tube first, followed by the ball race Bearing, then the Upper Cone, and finally the chromed Protection.

I'm still unsure how the Protection fits, unless it is just tapped lightly into place over the Upper Cone.

The upper cone is pressed into the frame steer tube. In order to remove it, you have to drop the fork and VERY carefully tap it out with a very long drift (from the inside of the steer tube). If you knock the upper cone sideways, it will oval the steer tube.

Thanks John.

And the protection?

Been a while, but I think the lower race holds the trim piece in position.
