Varitronic on 1955 LD

Can anyone shed light on my problem.
Basically I have a Varitronic timed at 26 BTDC .The Scooter pulls well and cruises well. But descending hills on closed or almost closed throttle it jerks (sort of hunts?) as though it wants to stop (quite jerky).
I have increased the main jet from 73 to 80. Needle is in the bottom groove.
Is what I am doing wrong or is there anything else I could try?
Confused!!!
Now find its 32BTDC with my strobe ! Is this too much ?
What should Spark Plug setting be with a Varitronic ?

Sorry, though I am happily running variatronic as well, my engine is much modified and wouldn't be an apt comparison.

The main jet will have no effect at less than 2/3 throttle but you should never close the throttle fully when going down hill as you will not be getting enough lubrication to the piston or crank. Does it happily tick over when warm?

Got stator plate cut down as far as I can safely go (only about 3mm left) timing now at 28 degrees. Good acceleration and idles nice but sounds like a bag of nails on deceleration and a bit jerky. Any ideas ?
