Model B gear change query

Postby Thackers » Wed May 29, 2024 10:49 am

I've spoken on here in the past about my B jumping out of 2nd gear. Up to last weekend I was convinced the problem lay inside the engine somewhere but now I have another theory that won't let me be. It's this, I have around 5mm play at the handlebar shifter and when I hold this slightly one way (towards 1st gear) it seems to hold 2nd gear better. I've replaced the Teleflex cable so now I'm thinking it could be the set of cogs in the lever end of the changer. So would 5mm play indicate worn shifter cogs? I would love someone with a model A, B, or C (Teleflex models) to tell me how theirs is by comparison . Then I would consider spending the money on a part I'm not just hoping for the best on a thought.
Thanks for any help on this one, as it is riding my B is often put off by this problem and if by chance any of you have those shifter cogs for sale I'd be interested to hear from you.
Thanks Dave.

Here's a photo of the business end of the teleflex cable.

Disconnect your cable from the shown shift quadrant. Go for a ride. If it still jumps out of gear it is internal -- unless, there is another external adjustment. There is one on the Ds but I am not familiar with the Bs.

Hi JB and thanks for your reply, I've done the cable disconnect some time back after changing the 26 tooth 2nd gear cog as I believed the three dogs were worn and it seemed to cure the problem. This was some time ago then the "jump" re-surfaced and the B was put to the back of the garage where it's remained until recently. I took it for a spin last weekend that's when I found keeping backwards pressure on the handlebar shifter kept it in 2nd much better, hence my question on the shifter cogs wear. I guess I'll have to keep the pressure on the lever for a bit longer until I can justify the the cost of the cogs as a "punt" at a fix :(

Most trannies that are popping out of gear can be held in gear unless they are really badly worn. All scoots have the gear indent system at the tranny itself. Play at the handle bar end can make selection difficult in that you might go too far but have nothing to do with holding it in gear.

Again, I'm not familiar with the Bs but there has to be a spring loaded lever working against the shift cam. You could fit a stronger spring, though this will make selection more difficult.

Also, when a gear is popping out, you have to change BOTH parts: the gear and its selector. If you just change one part, it will quickly wear the new part and you are back where you started.
