Chaps
Can someone put me out of my misery.
I cannot see where the gearbox oil level plug is. I have looked at the old manuals and books and they just point to an area with no visual picture of the actual level plug.
Can someone take a picture and point me in the right direction please i just can't find it and don't want to overfill the gearbox.
Thanks
Bolti

On your crankcase side you have two plugs (usually Allen bolts) on the bottom. These are bigger than the nuts holding the crankcase side on and are sometimes made of brass, some Indian ones can have a large bolt (17mm/19mm ?).

One is towards the rear wheel under the kickstart mount/shaft, this is the drain plug and the second, the level, is towards the cylinder end. On a level surface this is slightly higher than the drain plug.

Hope this helps.

Just read the topic title..... ignore teaching you how to suck eggs

Drain plug:

Level plug:

(14 mm hex head plug at the bottom of the clutch cover)

The level plug is at the bottom of a vertical passage. When the gearbox oil is poured in, any excess will flow out. To fill, undo the large allen plug above the kickstart mech.

The hole for the level plug is the 8mm vertical threaded hole on the bottom of the cover, next to the bulge for the starter motor gears. I seem to remember that overfilling the gearbox on an AVV could lead to oil finding its way into the starter motor gearing, and the teeth on the outside of the clutch bell would probably churn up the oil if the level is too high. I reckon the level plug on the AVV will give around 1/2 pint of oil in the gearbox, about the same as the early LD models. Later (non AVV) models had a level plug on the clutch cover which was on the side of the clutch cover, giving greater oil capacity.

Whereas the slightly angled filler plug is on the large transmission drive and rear axle unit, and takes a large allen key to undo it, the level plug is low down on the clutch cover.

So thanks for all your guidance chaps. I have located and set the level once drained.
Now tell me please. This seems to defeat the object of a level plug but I have read that you let it drain till it stops. Then return the level plug and further add a quarter pint.
Is this so?
Thanks as always

Early clutch covers had a a shorter vertical passage above the level plug. They later added a longer vertical passage so it would hold a 1/4 pint more oil. At the same time they recommended earlier machines have an extra 1/4 pint after full to the level plug. Yours is a later engine so just fill to the level plug.
