I will shortly be fitting a petrol tap made up from my collection of individual parts. I have used a new black circular gasket (the one with the small holes) each time in the past. I am not looking forward to this because of finding the correct tension on the two screws that hold it in place. Too slack and it leaks requiring turning off at each destination. Too tight and either the bottom of the on/off rod shears or the split pin breaks. Once in situ the tap is difficult to adjust and usually involves draining the tank and a strip down. This happened recently and the rod broke but luckily in the on position..
Any tips on managing this item as I have only one good tap left.

D and LD taps are infamous for leaking. There was even an aftermarket tray available that fit under the carb to catch the drips and direct them to the ground rather than all over the engine. I took my tap apart and used a piece of fine emory cloth and a flat surface to make tap's face was true and flat. That helped quite a bit but it still leaks a wee bit so made up my own drip tray. Works well.

Also, D and LD taps are being made again but the new ones leak as well.
