Lambretta LD 150 Petrol tap.

I will shortly be fitting a petrol tap made up from my collection of individual parts. I have used a new black circular gasket (the one with the small holes) each time in the past. I am not looking forward to this because of finding the correct tension on the two screws that hold it in place. Too slack and it leaks requiring turning off at each destination. Too tight and either the bottom of the on/off rod shears or the split pin breaks. Once in situ the tap is difficult to adjust and usually involves draining the tank and a strip down. This happened recently and the rod broke but luckily in the on position..
Any tips on managing this item as I have only one good tap left.
