I recently posted a query relating to the removal of this oil seal, and John Collier replied, but I can't see the topic or any message relating to it on here now. Can anyone else?
It appears that, as well as the circlip, the small rectangular plate (with the central, circular flange) must also be removed by releasing the four nuts and spring washers in order to give access to the oilseal.
I have cleared the breather as John suggested, and can now see daylight through it! Good advice. Thanks.

Having just successfully replaced the rear stub axle oil seal, I discovered that the Serviceman's Book explains how to replace it, not in the Rear Axle section, but under Brakes and Wheels.
With the rear wheel and hub removed, the small rectangular plate, which is in fact the oilseal housing, needs to be detached from the axle by releasing the four nuts and washers. The circlip is then removed from this housing, allowing the release of the old oilseal. There is a thin black rubber ring on the back of the housing. I couldn't find a replacement, so I left it in place, but added a film of clear sealant all round before refitting it and tightening the four nuts (with spring washers behind).
I discovered that someone had previously hammered down part of the inner flange onto the circlip, which wouldn't budge, presumably to keep the circlip in place. This was completely unnecessary, as the circlip was a very good fit in its groove, and only made a simple job much more difficult.
Hopefully the new oilseal and the cleared breather will now prevent any oil getting through onto the brake shoes.
