My Rusty red DL150

Postby Kristof Lammy pie » Thu Feb 18, 2016 12:53 pm

My recent purchase, a 1969 DL150 original body and motor mostly original paint apart from the white wheels and yellow parts added at some point.

The white wheels will be removed and replaced with original silver and some mad bugger has tried paint the forks red but that's flaking off so I will let nature take its course as the original silver paint is good underneath.

I will keep the yellow parts on the body as it's part of its history.

She is a bit rusty in places with a tiny hole here and there but it's been covered in acf50 so hopefully it won't get much worse if I keep on top of it.

Just waiting for the reg documents to come back and it will be on the road.

Very Nice. Do you know any of its history? What are your plans for it mechanically?

No history at all with it. There is a dealer sticker on the legshield but I can't make it out.

The engine has just been rebuilt with new seals etc and a new piston and rings using the original barrel.

It needs running at the moment so once that's done I will decide what to do with it.

It needs new cables and a few other bits ideally but will see what it's like to ride first.

I like an Italian GP150 despite all that is said about the gearbox.

I ran an orange/white 150 for a while in the 70’s reluctantly, initially, whilst sorting out my ‘main’ 200’s. I bought it from a girl & was supposed to have gone back for the ‘Sidewinder’ backrest I left there. At the time, I thought “Yeah, right! You can keep your ironing board to press creases in your knickers!”

Isn’t hindsight cruel?

Now, I can’t recall why I had to change the forks, but it had GP200 forks & reverse pull disc brake.

Naturally (!) the exhaust got changed for a gutted standard box but its incredible how much more responsive it became whilst delivering good economy considering it was flat out everywhere.

The GP150 is a very smooth, underrated machine. Red is the best colour IMO, as well. If ever I get to rebuild the red GP200 frame in my attic, perhaps I should downsize it.......

I hope you enjoy yours.

Many thanks for the comments.

I've only ridden it up the road and back, the engine is very tight feeling but not in a good way. (May just need running in) I've never had to run in a bike before. The gear change is bloody awful tight as hell so I may need to cable it before using it for the summer.

I do like it though.

No I won't be restoring it, it will stay as it is for as long as I can keep the rust at bay.

Like the look of them tyres, what are they? They remind me of the old Michelin Dexters.

I use the acf50 as a polish a liberal coating with paint brush and a wipe with a cloth gives a good shine and it eats the rust. Happy days!
