Stripey George & the AA patrol boxes

Instead of going the Kelso rally I decided to go and tick off some AA patrol boxes from the list of only 19 that now survive, from over 800 originally nationwide.
Got home 11 hours later and won't sit down now for a week!
As Guy Martin would say, the day was MEGA!
Another 300 miles on Stripey George...keep going old lad!

First up was Box 573 at the bottom of Garrowby Hill on the way to Bridlington...

...then over into the Yorkshire Dales to Box 442 at Aysgarth in Wensleydale...

Image

120 miles in and the old rump was feeling it, but I soldiered on and got up into the Lake District for Box 487 on Dunmail Raise between Grasmere & Keswick.

Image

Stopped at various points along the way to do some sightseeing - this is the road through Wensleydale nearing Sedbergh - the Howgill hills in the background

...and in my favourite Lake District valley, Langdale...

Good on ya mate, great write up great pic's. I don't know how many times I've been over Dunmail raise must be hundreds and I've never noticed that box, I'll certainly have a look for it now.

Great thread.

Thanks.

Heading north from Grasmere it's in a layby on the right, about a mile before the split starts in the carriageway....looking south from it you can still see Helm Crag peeping at you

Passed 723 the other day (in the car) on the Moffat -Selkirk road, great road, unfortunatly they had resurfaced it in little stones and beware the sheep.

I'm sure you will
Had to stop the car, get out and kick the sheep to make them move.
Have a good ride

A shame there are not more preserved AA boxes, another pretty unique sight sadly lost from most of the UK. Wouldnt be at all surprised if some havent been quietly lifted over the years..

They look much better than the RAC ones, which strongly resemble Portaloos:
