Can you swap out piston circlips for the more modern wire type?

The groove in the piston is cut differently so no.

What's the difference? The scootopia 186 kit comes with both options. I've only used the wire type, so I've no idea if the circlips go in ok, but you'd expect so as they come with the kit.

Tractorman is correct.

The groove profile has sharp corners for traditional pressed steel circlips that usually have 'pierced' ears.

The groove profile is semi-circular for wire circlips. To obtain a bulletproof installation, the earless sort are best, or cut them off to avoid them wearing off via the gudgeon pin rotation......
