TS1 salvageable?

Hello,

Piston circlip broke and went up the side of the piston

Can this barrel still be salvaged and used and if so what is the best way to do it?








As you can see the only real damage is to the boost port edges, can I just smooth these with a dremmel?

I face a similar quandary if I choose to persevere with a similarly damaged small block Mugello barrel that I bought on a whim.

Initially, I thought of adding some material such as Devcon but there would be no plating on that portion of the bore & it may be a solution, but just too gash for me to rest easy.

My considered opinion is that you can raise the transfer ports (ensuring they are matched) if your port timing will stand it. That is not very likely, though, it may be worth trying in your case.

In my own case, what I was thinking of doing, if anything (!), was to increase the stroke to 60 mm or beyond to bring about an overall better state of tune.

Obviously, that must be done in conjunction with all of the other factors considered such as cylinder head, exhaust port & con-rod, but I’m just expressing an opinion here.

You have an opportunity to capitalise on your misfortune.

Although I have quite a bit of kit for porting, there are now some Chinese made Dental drill kits that are for sale @ about £80. For the cost of a piston, you can buy a variable speed (up to 35 000 rpm) motor control unit with hand-piece & two interchangeable heads. The angled head should enable transfer ports to be reached quite easily.

I`ve been running one for years that's worse than that - I check it every year and always expect a problem, but it hasn't got any worse and has done more miles since it was damaged than before.

As already said - Quick clean up to make sure no bad edges and a new piston.

If your worried you get a new one and send it to me I`ll make use of it !!

it will be fine, no issues. if you don't believe me (and those above) then I will happily take it off your hands for £50!

Just a gentle clean up with some 240 grit wet & dry with your finger will be enough

There you go! WTF do I know! I still wouldn't do that long term...

Any takers for a similar, but less, damaged Mugello Ø66 mm small block cylinder? I even have new single ring pistons to suit...
